iPhone apps (Plus a chance to win!)

UK flagAs one writer elsewhere put it “Because a smartphone without apps ain’t so smart”.  As the iPhone is very smart, I’ve been trying a few of the apps available for it and thought I’d share my views.

For games the cleverest I’m playing is Trism.  In basic terms it falls into the “clear the tiles” category but the design and interface make it much more than that.  It’s a gem.  For the word lovers there’s Quordy, which is essentially Boggle without the chance of losing the dice.  The user interface is clever and intuitive.  Both these games exploit the best features of the iPhone platform.

In ‘Utilities’ the selection is very varied and I guess usefulness depends entirely on your way of life.  I’ve found SpeakEasy to be fun and great to use.  It is one of many voice recorder apps but has, for me, the best user interface and options.  It doesn’t yet email the recordings off the iPhone but that particular feature isn’t high up my priority list.  I’m not sure whether PhoneSaber is a game or a utility, but it is free and fun!

The best news is that these games and utilities are cheap.  Many are at 99c.  Many more are free, and though there is often truth in the maxim that you get what you pay for the range and quality of apps being developed suggests a good future for the iPhone.

If you’d like to have a chance of winning an iPhone 3G so you can experience the joy yourself, why not join in the Erie Blogs Week II and support a good cause at the same time by giving blood.
