Will they clash?

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

UK flagToday we made a paint decision for the dining room and also bought a dining table and chairs.  We’re not quite sure if the furniture will go with the paint (or vice versa) but should find out by the end of next week.  I suspect it will be easier to re-paint than to send the furniture back and try and find another set, but hopefully neither course of action will be necessary.

Apart from the dining room furniture we ordered a few other bits and pieces.  Suffice to say that by the end of next week the house should seem a little bit fuller.  Mind you, there are still empty rooms…

The event for today was the unseasonally high temperatures - the car registered 54 degrees at one stage.  It felt quite unnatural, and we’ll be almost glad to see temperatures get back to around freezing tomorrow.

Terracotta…Gingerbread…Orange Clay

US flagWhy is picking paint colours so difficult?  It wasn’t hard for the little one.  I took her to Lowe’s and said she could pick anything.  She found the pinkest pink she could find and insisted that it was perfect.  That it was called “Candy” was a bonus.  And you know what?  She was right, it is the perfect colour for her room.  The room looks wonderful and she loves it.

So why is the dining room giving us so much trouble?  We are doing the downstairs in “earth tones” really.  So we thought we would paint the (currently pink with gold sponging effect) dining room in a nice earth tone colour.  But the first two possiblities looked far too dark when we tried samples of them.  The second two were lighter, but still not quite right.  And the fifth (!) option is “too wishy washy” for my husband and son.  (I actually like it a lot…)

So now we are back to the two middle choices.  One is more orangey than the other and I prefer the other.  But the men in my life are both firmly behind the “orangey” one.  So the debate rages on.  (For the record, the little one prefers one from the first lot, unfortunately for her, that one is definitely out!)

One of these days I’m just going to buy some paint and paint the stupid room.  It isn’t even being used as a dining room at the moment because we don’t have a formal dining room table and chairs.  At the moment it is being used for the computers because we do have a table in there.  And flat surfaces are in somewhat short supply elsewhere in the house!

Whatever colour it ends up being painted, someone isn’t going to like it!

Dental novelties

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

US flagYou can get just about anything from a catalogue these days.  Hubby found a section labelled “dental novelties” in the latest one that appeared in our mailbox.

I don’t know if the previous owners of our new home bought a lot from catalogues or just bought one or two teeth090202things and ended up on everyone else’s mailing list, but they do get an awful lot of catalogues.  And since the post office doesn’t forward them, I now get to enjoy browsing through catalogues of “everything for cats and cat lovers” or “home decor”.  We also seem to get a lot of clothing catalogues.  Since we haven’t been here long enough to be on anyone’s list ourselves yet, I’m finding it quite fun to have a look through the stuff that keeps turning up.

Of course, it is a terrible waste of paper, printing all these things to send to us as I’ve no intention of actually buying anything.  But it is fun to see what all is out there…like dental novelties…didn’t know they existed…haven’t found a use for them yet!
