I was supposed to fly

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

UK flagNo, nothing to do with travel, but a quote from our 6-year old daughter today.  I’m not sure what she has been reading, but she is running round holding a small sheet behind her like a cape.  At the end of the run she leaps in the air and then lands again.

I checked her sanity.  Or, rather, she corrected mine!  It seems she doesn’t want to fly, or even expect to fly, but figured she’d try this routine and just see what happens.  She has a very inquisitive mind.

Lovely sun today.  The driveway is fully visible for the first time in ages, though you have to be on it to see it as it is surrounded by quite high snow mountains.  Stand to one side and it vanishes behind the snow ranges.

It’s a lovely day.  The children are in a happy mood, the sun is shining and the chores list has been officially suspended for the day! :-)

And, for the record, I don’t care who wins, I’d just like to see a great game for my first Superbowl.

Slightly warm

US flagI had about five errands to run this afternoon.  I had to pick up a check for instance for the house closing tomorrow, and run to the Gas Company and prove that my husband exists.  Little things like that.  And, of course, the kids had to tag along as they are off school and I didn’t have a chance to make other arrangements.  (My cousin actually offered to take them off my hands, but then her mother called from the Emergency Room and she had other things to worry about!)

About half way through the errand list, the little one announced that she didn’t feel well.  And I felt her forehead and it was warm.  Not hot, but warmer than normal.  And I remembered that being a mother is hard work some times.  I don’t think she is really ill.  She has been fighting a cold for ages, but she doesn’t seem that bad.  But I worry.  It goes with the stretch marks.

We had to finish the errands, otherwise we can’t close tomorrow and that raises a whole raft of other problems.  She was a brave little trouper about it all, but she was clearly not feeling her best.  Now we are home and she is on the couch with a blanket, a pillow, and a cuddly toy, watching Barbie and the Diamond Castle.  After a little while, she asked for some Cheerios, and she has actually eaten them, so I’m sure she isn’t doing too badly.  But it is hard not to worry.

Tomorrow morning I have to be up at the crack of dawn to drive to Buffalo for the house closing.  My mother is looking after the kids.  I trust her, really I do, but I wish I didn’t have to go.

Laws - some thoughts

UK flagOver the last couple of days I’ve been doing a lot of running around in the car with just the 5-year old for company.  So now her favorite music is Blondie.  I can’t make up my mind whether there should be a law protecting children from the music of their parents or not.

Buying foodstuffs from the supermarkets here is a mystery tour.  In the UK Canada Dry Ginger Ale contains, according to the ingredients on the label, “ginger”.  Here it contains “natural flavorings”.  Is that the same thing?  How can I tell?  Does ‘Schweppes Raspberry Ginger Ale’ contain any raspberry, any ginger or any anything?  Food labeling should show exactly what is in there, and should also show the percentages.  That’s in line with UK so you can tell, for instance, exactly how much chicken is in those nuggets.  Presumably there would be serious opposition to such consumer friendly legislation - but where would it come from?
