Immigrant status

UK flagIt is quite easy to get health insurance if you have a Social Security Number (SSN).  It is less easy if you haven’t.  Today I’ve arranged health insurance for myself for the first 3 months as an immigrant.  Lots of sites are offering cover but on all the ones I looked at, once you look at the details, they are essentially selling travel insurance.  Still, it covers in an emergency.

There are far too many things that can’t be done until I get my SSN.  I think the immigrant experience would be greatly enhanced by speeding up the SSN part of the process.  That’s just my view, and I can understand why the SSN is so important, but as an immigrant entering the country on a private basis, rather than as part of a corporate move, the current process simply adds to the burden.  Luckily in this case we should be able to manage quite well, but others may have less of a buffer.

Common language - Part 1

UK flagToday’s focus was on finishing off a resume.  Or a CV if you are reading this from the UK.  The title of this post reflects what will undoubtedly be a recurring theme, of differences in language.  Although in this case the difference goes deeper, with the expected presentation of a UK CV being quite different to the style of a US resume.  Hopefully by early next week the resume will be emailed to one or two prospective employers.

The language differences have already materialised in Erieversible if you look at the first few posts.  Primarily due to the use of a ‘z’ instead of the European ’s’ in certain words.  I’ve no idea if the word “materialised” used in this paragraph has a ‘z’ or ’s’ in the US.  Small difference, but one that is sure to be noticed by some people if used wrongly!

And speaking of jobs, it seems I’ve progressed as far as I can with both looking for employment and setting up Celtic Grid Consulting and Erie Computer Training (shameless plugs) - before anything further can be done I need a Social Security Number and an address.  I can’t get a SSN until I arrive in the US, which won’t be for a month yet, and as for an address….I’d better take note of my wife’s comments in her post from today!
